Screening, Treatment, and Education Programs
Grant awards within the STEP program represent by far the largest part of our Affiliate's
local grant-making endeavor. The following are some of the standards set by the
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® for STEP grants:
- Komen Affiliates make grants only to other nonprofit organizations, educational
institutions, and government entities.
- Grants are not awarded to programs that primarily are fundraising in nature.
- Grant applications are solicited during a predetermined time period and awarded
once a year. The duration of each program considered is no more than one year.
- All requests for grant funding must be processed through an independent and objective
Affiliate review procedure.
- The Affiliate Board of Directors must approve the funding of all grants.
Our local Grant Review Committee considers multiple criteria when reviewing applications
for STEP grants. Each grant application must:
- Address a need as determined by a community profile assessment completed by the
local Affiliate.
- Emphasize services to medically underserved and at risk populations.
- Address funding needs that are not duplicated elsewhere.
- Provide for services within a defined geographic service area.
- Request salaries only for personnel related to the proposed program, and not the
general work of the applicant.
- Be considered efficient and have a good chance of success.
- Have well-defined, measurable and attainable goals and objectives.
- Display a clear evaluation plan.
- Contain a budget that is clear and adequately supports the objectives of the project.
Request for Proposal (STEP Grants)
The promise of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is "to save lives and end breast
cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing
science to find the cures." Affiliates of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® represent one
of the nation's largest private funding sources for breast health and breast cancer
screening, education and treatment support programs.
The Milwaukee Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Inc. currently
is offering grants for non-duplicative community-based projects in the areas of
breast health, breast cancer education/outreach, breast cancer screening, and breast
cancer treatment support projects. Grants should target services not otherwise available
to medically underserved populations of the following Southeastern Wisconsin counties:
Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha.
Funds are allocated on an annual calendar year basis. There is no guarantee of subsequent
year funding for current or past grantees.
*All inquiries for research funding should be directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
Research Grant Program. More information is available via Komen's comprehensive
website, www.komen.org.
Statement of Need
The groups identified by the Affiliate for the eight county service area in greatest
need are as follows: uninsured and underinsured, African Americans, Hispanic Latino
and the low income populations. It was noted that the group identified as "low income"
may include those from all the populations reviewed.
The gaps/needs are prioritized as follows: 1) cost and access to services related
to available income, 2) education and awareness especially in the minority populations
and 3) cultural/behavioral obstacles. Fear was considered more of a problem in the
African American community than others noted.
