The Komen Milwaukee Affiliate raises funds through various means, including the
Komen Milwaukee Race for the Cure®. Up to 75% of the net proceeds from our Affiliate
events remain in Southeastern Wisconsin and are used to fund screening, treatment
and education programs in our community. A minimum of 25% is contributed directly
to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Research Fund. These monies serve as our Affiliate's contribution
to breast cancer research.
Components of a "Good" Grant
Successful grants are not random events. They are the result of intense planning,
careful implementation, and thoughtful evaluation Often times, one singular approach
is not sufficient to produce the desired outcome. Researchers suggest multi-component
programs increase impact and sustainability. Here are some key elements of successful
programs:
- Community involvement in delivering the program (helps build capacity and promotes sustainability)
- Superior understanding of the target population
- Partnering with existing programs, agencies, and community resources
- Hiring staff similar to the population targeted
- Use a theory proven successful in health promotion
- Strong evaluation component from initiative conception
- Using a multi-disciplinary approach
- Adequate support in resources and training
Purpose of Affiliate Grants Programs
The purpose of each Affiliate's Grants Program is to fulfill the promise of Susan
G. Komen for the Cure® "to save lives and end breast cancer forever by
empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find
the cures." The main focus of achieving this goal is the funding of screening,
treatment, and education programs (STEP grants) within each service area.
Since the inception of our STEP Grants, the Komen
Milwaukee Affiliate has awarded 25 Grants, totalling nearly $600,000.00.
The Komen Milwaukee Affiliate offers a Grant Writing Workshop
