Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
MILWAUKEE, WI, December 1, 2009 – Today Roundy's Supermarkets made a $35,000 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® for breast cancer research.
The money will be distributed to the Milwaukee, Central Wisconsin and Madison, Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund breast cancer education, screening, and access to treatment.
Vivian King, Roundy's Director of Public Affairs, presented the larger-than-life check to Sally Sheperdson who accepted it on behalf of Komen. Shepherdson serves as Executive Director for the Komen Milwaukee Affiliate.
"Roundy's and the Roundy's Foundation have a long history of supporting breast cancer awareness," says King. For several years, we have donated thousands of dollars in water and snacks to the Komen Race for the Cure in Milwaukee and other cities. We were happy to partner with some of the brands featured in our stores to generate today's gift to support Susan G. Komen."
Sheperdson adds, "We are grateful to Acosta Sales and Marketing and Roundy's for their generosity. These funds will be put to work locally to provide free mammograms and access to treatment for uninsured and under-insured women in Wisconsin."
The partnership consisted of Roundy's Supermarkets and Acosta Sales and Marketing's Swanson, Gorton's, Welch's, Mott's, and Bush's manufacturer clients. All of Roundy's 154 Pick 'n Save, Copps, and Rainbow stores in Wisconsin and Minnesota participated in the special promotion to support the Komen donation. On-shelf point-of-sale and a half-page spot in the stores' weekly ads let shoppers know how to show their support by purchasing participating products.
The ceremony took place at Pick 'n Save, located at 1717 N. Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa.
